Ideal Standard is a privately owned company operating in more than 20 countries and employing over 11,000 people worldwide.
Project Requirements
The Ideal Standard employee infrastructure is diverse. The workforce is based within both office and manufacturing environments presenting unique challenges in communicating effectively.
StyleTech's brief was to identify how a web based solution could improve communication with as many employees as possible, regardless of their IT skills.
The Solution
StyleTech designed and developed a web-based solution, which uses a unique "portal café" approach, accompanied by touch-screen kiosk technology.
Due to the range of IT skills within the Ideal Standard workforce, the web based solution had to implement a simple to use method of publishing content. StyleTech established that the Ideal Standard workforce had familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of software and utilised employees existing knowledge by creating an application that is accessible from within Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This application allows the Ideal Standard workforce to publish content to the web based solution without leaving Word, Excel or PowerPoint and without requiring any additional knowledge.
By calling on all of their development expertise, the StyleTech team were able to deliver a high functioning system, particularly in terms of usability and security. The unique characteristics of the "no technical jargon" approach accompanied by simplicity in design were rewarded with "Best Intranet" at the "Communication in Business"(CiB) awards for the North of England.
Information security is paramount, keeping the design approach simple, a selection of the security features include:-
- Role specific security levels
- Check-in and check-out document procedures
- Audit trials in relation to stored documentation
The Outcome
This award winning intranet provides quick and easy access to information on Ideals Standard's operating procedures, product standards, health and safety updates and online training courses.
The system as a whole has proved a hit with Ideal's workforce, particularly the touch-screen kiosks in canteens and walkway areas providing 24 hour access.
News items and business messages previously printed, distributed manually and displayed on wall-mounted notice boards are now distributed through the "portal café", realising substantial savings for the company in terms of time and resources.
Communication channels at all levels have been encouraged with use of the discussion forum and online conference room facilities.
Working with the Ideal Standard UK Communications Team and through regular steering group interaction, StyleTech have been able to present an award winning web based communication solution, where daily activity supersedes all expectations.
