StyleTech successfully tendered to create an interactive educational website which would communicate information on the issues surrounding smoking in an innovative and engaging way.
The interactive resource which we delivered was a first of its kind for an NHS trust. The website covered everything from health issues and impacts on family life, to bullying and to tobacco-related crime, with special areas of interest for children, parents and teachers.
Pupils from schools across the city participated in steering groups for the project, providing input and feedback on the content of the site and how to get the no-smoking message across to peers and adults. They chose the visual styling of the site and approved The Smirkins, an imaginary family whose experiences of smoking are featured and who give advice through on-site forums. The website targeted young people with age-appropriate information and imagery. It also has a dedicated parents’ information area and a secure central resource area for teachers providing lesson plans and downloadable teaching resources.
In the first 12 months, more than 16,000 people accessed online help and the service helped over 5,000 people across the region to quit smoking.
The website received a SID Award for technology focussed on the contribution made by technology-based projects to improving frontline NHS care.
"The website is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together. Combining our health expertise with the work of an IT company with a proven track record of collaboration was the most effective way of achieving our goals."
